Tester onboarding guide
Thanks for testing Warded. It sits between your AI assistant and your Gmail: it holds back medical and financial emails, removes sensitive values from the rest, and shows you what your assistant read. Setup takes about 10 minutes.
Before you start, read the beta notice. This is an early experiment and the filter can make mistakes.
1. Get invited
Send thenapkinlab@gmail.com:
- the email you'll sign in with;
- which assistant you use.
Wait for a confirmation first. The sign-in page blocks addresses that haven't been added.
2. Sign in and connect Gmail
- Sign in with your invited email.
- On Setup, tick that you've read the beta notice and click Connect Gmail.
- Google will say it "hasn't verified this app". That's expected for a small beta: choose Advanced → Go to … (unsafe), then allow read-only access.
3. Add the connector to your assistant
Claude is the only assistant we've tested, and Muse support is the least certain. For the others, you're finding out with us: menus change often, so tell us if a step doesn't match.
Claude Tested
- Open Claude: Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector.
- Name it "Warded" and paste
https://app.getwarded.com/mcp, then click Add. - Sign in with your invited email when Claude asks, and approve.
- Turn off Claude's built-in Gmail connector, and remove Claude in Google Account → Security → Third-party connections.
ChatGPT Not tested yet
- On chatgpt.com, open Settings → Apps & Connectors → Advanced and turn on Developer mode. If it isn't there, look under Settings → Security. Availability depends on your plan, and a work account's admin may need to allow it.
- Back in Apps & Connectors, click Create, name it "Warded", paste
https://app.getwarded.com/mcp, choose OAuth and save. - Sign in with your invited email when asked, and approve.
- In a new chat, pick the connector from the tools menu.
- Disconnect ChatGPT's built-in Gmail, and remove OpenAI in Google Account → Security → Third-party connections.
Gemini app Not tested yet
- On gemini.google.com (web only, in English), open Settings → Connected Apps. Custom apps depend on your account and location, and may need Keep Activity turned on.
- Under Custom apps, add a new app, paste
https://app.getwarded.com/mcpand click Next. - Approve the connection and sign in with your invited email. The app then also shows in the Gemini mobile app.
- Turn off Gemini's built-in Gmail access in Connected Apps, because that route doesn't go through this filter.
Perplexity Not tested yet
- Open Plugins in the sidebar and select Add custom. This may need a paid plan.
- Name it "Warded", paste
https://app.getwarded.com/mcp, and sign in with your invited email when asked. - Turn off Perplexity's built-in Gmail connector, if you've added it.
Muse Not tested yet
As far as we can tell, the Muse app doesn't offer custom connectors yet, so this may not work for you. Muse Code is reported to support them. Check its documentation, as these steps are unconfirmed.
- In Muse Code's settings file (
~/.config/muse/settings.json), add a "Warded" entry withhttps://app.getwarded.com/mcpundermcp_servers. - Restart Muse Code, and sign in with your invited email if asked.
4. Check it works
- Ask your assistant: "Using Warded, how many emails did I get yesterday?"
- Open Activity. Your request should appear within a few seconds, with the assistant's name.
- If it doesn't appear, your assistant probably used another route. Check step 3.
5. Try these
| Ask | What should happen |
|---|---|
| "When is my next flight or booking?" | Trip details come through. Dates of birth and passport numbers show as [removed: …]. |
| "Where are my recent orders?" | Order details come through. Your home address shows as [removed: home address]. |
| "Show my latest verification codes." | The code is removed, or the email is withheld if it's from your bank. |
| "Show my latest bank statement." | Withheld. Your assistant is told how many emails were held back and why. |
| "Any test results or GP letters?" | Withheld. |
| Your usual questions and scheduled tasks | This is the most useful test of all. |
6. Tell us what happens
On Activity, open a request's Emails and use Open in Gmail to compare.
- Something sensitive got through: press Something leaked and pick the type. Only the type is recorded.
- Something was withheld that shouldn't have been: press Release next time.
- Anything else (confusing steps, slow answers, ideas): email thenapkinlab@gmail.com. Describe the type of email, and please don't forward or paste its contents.
If something goes wrong
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| "This beta is invite-only" | Sign in with the email you sent us, or ask us to add it. |
| Google says "Access blocked" | Your Gmail address isn't on Google's test list yet. Tell us the address. |
| "Couldn't reach Gmail" or a red notice in Activity | Google access has lapsed, which can happen during this beta. Disconnect and reconnect Gmail on Setup. |
| "The privacy filter is busy" or "couldn't run" | Nothing was shared. Try again in a minute. |
| "Usage limit reached" | The limits are 100 emails per 10 minutes and 500 per day. Try again later. |
| Your assistant can't find the connector | Check it's turned on for that chat, and that your plan allows custom connectors. |
| An error with a reference | Send us the reference. It lets us find the problem without seeing your email. |
Good to know
- Attachment contents are never opened or shared, only their names.
- Other connected tools, and your assistant's own web search, don't go through this filter.
Leaving
In Settings → Delete my data you can delete everything, which also revokes our Google access. Remove the connector from your assistant too.
